Alejandra Stehr<br \/>\nMember of the European Studies Program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The problem of\u00a0<strong>water shortage in Chile<\/strong>\u00a0it has become more acute. A generalized decrease in rainfall and an increase in temperatures are projected, which will be reflected in a decrease in available water and with it, a significant reduction in the carrying capacity or dilution of typical and emerging pollutants, in addition to the increase in risks. for the supply of drinking water from surface waters.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Chili<\/strong>Although in urban areas drinking water coverage is 99.9%, in rural areas, where there are no concession areas, it has been estimated that more than 750,000 people lack access to drinking water. And we well know, especially in times of pandemic, that an adequate amount of good quality water is necessary to achieve several of the<strong>\u00a0Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), entre los que se encuentran el ODS 3 (salud) y ODS 6 (seguridad del agua).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With regard to drinking water and emerging pollutants (residues of drugs, pesticides and other polluting substances that have been detected in water bodies and are not regulated), these new challenges are already being addressed by the\u00a0<strong>European Union<\/strong>, with standards that we should replicate. Its Parliament adopted a new directive on the quality of water intended for human consumption (DIRECTIVE (EU) 2020\/2184), which entered into force on January 12, 2021. With regard to emerging pollutants, this Directive incorporates the Bisphenol A, a representative compound with endocrine disrupting properties, in addition to two others, on a Watch List, a mechanism that will allow new knowledge about the relevance to human health of these emerging compounds to be tracked. It also includes the\u00a0<strong>Preventive Safety Planning<\/strong>\u00a0and elements based on risk factors, giving detailed instructions on how to carry it out. The member states must carry out an evaluation of the levels of water leaks in the networks in their territory and the potential for improvement in reducing these, using the classification method of the structural leakage index or another appropriate method.<\/p>\n<p>The aforementioned points should be considered in updating the<strong>\u00a0Decreto N\u00b0735 \u201cReglamento de los Servicios de Agua Destinados al Consumo Humano<\/strong>\u201d, que actualmente se encuentra en consulta p\u00fablica.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dra.
