Ver\u00f3nica Delgado Schneider<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>Member of the European Studies Program<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is usual that by activities or companies \"<strong>sustainable<\/strong>\u201dWe have quite different concepts. Sometimes, frankly, the adjective is used in clearly \"unsustainable\" contexts.<\/p>\n<p>On the occasion of the reactivation of the European economy (including efforts by the public and private sectors) and the clear path that has been decided to take by adopting the \u201cPact\u00a0<strong>Green\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0In the fight against climate change, the European Union considered it essential to define minimum criteria to define sustainability and, thus, promote that the large financing available is directed to this type of initiatives and not to eco-whitewashing projects, that is, those that support be \"<strong>green<\/strong>\u201d, Without being it.<\/p>\n<p>The new community regulations establish six criteria, on the basis of which financial market players and companies with more than 500 employees must indicate how and to what extent their activities are taxed on them or clearly declare that they are not declared \u201csustainable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, for the clarity of companies and investors, a \u201cgreen investment\u201d is one that certifies that it contributes to at least one of the following 6 criteria without significantly damaging any of the others: i) mitigation and ii) adaptation to climate change; iii) sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources; iv) transition to a circular economy, including waste prevention and increased use of secondary raw materials; v) prevention and control of pollution, and vi) protection and restoration of biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>The standards are really high. For example, in the \"protection\" of water, it will be sustainable that activity that contributes \"substantially\" to guaranteeing greater access for human consumption, that the water is free of any microorganism, parasite or substance that is hazardous to human health; improve water management and efficiency; contribute to reducing the effects of floods and droughts; or prevent or improve its quality with respect to spills related to pharmaceutical products and microplastics. Or, with respect to marine ecosystems, when it contributes substantially to the protection, conservation and \"restoration\" of the marine environment and avoids or reduces discharges into it.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt.\u00a0<strong>A substantial advance in European environmental and climate regulations, hopefully replicable.<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dra.
